daycare

The owners of a daycare on twenty acres of wooded property, contacted MACED in the spring of 2008 seeking a way to lower their utility bills at the daycare, a maintenance barn and their house. They received an energy assessment and valuable consultation. Ultimately, given the wood on their property, the daycare owners decided to replace their electric heating system with a wood gasification boiler that could heat all three buildings.

Wood gasification boilers are highly efficient at converting wood mass into heat. Units can get up to 97% combustion efficiency, burning 97% of all combustible products in the wood and emitting almost no smoke. In contrast, standard wood stoves with dampers often only achieve 50% or less combustion efficiency.

Through a loan from MACED, which covered the costs of purchasing and installing the new system, the clients were able to stop using propane gas and heating oil entirely and greatly reduce their dependence on electricity as a source of heating.

The system was installed in early autumn of 2008. From December 2008 through May 2009, 6225 kWh were saved or $685 on electricity. In addition, they bought no propane or fuel oil which saved them an additional $1394 over what they had spent the previous year. In total, over the six months, $2079 was saved.
