MACED Energy Specialist Becomes a Certified Energy Manager

Berea, Ky — The Mountain Association for Community Economic Development’s Energy Specialist, Joshua Bills, has become qualified as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). The CEM is a professional certification recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Office of Federal Energy Management Programs, the U.S. Agency for International Development and numerous state energy offices, major utilities, corporations and energy service companies.
As Joshua Bills states, “The CEM certification requires in-depth knowledge of a vast assortment of energy related subjects—energy accounting, building envelope, energy management systems, lighting, boilers, HVAC, motors—the list goes on. This body of knowledge is the foundation for detecting high value energy savings opportunities for participants of MACED’s Energy Efficient Enterprises project.”
Bills heads MACED’s Energy Efficient Enterprises project which is designed to bring energy efficiency to Appalachian Kentucky. According to Mr. Bills, “Businesses and organizations that seek to be successful financially and which are careful to protect the natural world around them are the cornerstone of a vibrant Appalachia. Byinvesting in energy efficiency, enterprises can be more profitable, improve working conditions and reduce negative effects on the environment. With the money saved from energy efficiency measures, enterprises may choose to invest in renewable energy sources, further reducing their environmental impact.”
Bills has a Mechanical Engineering degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and experience with over 100 renewable energy installations throughout Kentucky, Haiti and West Africa. Bills most recently owned and operated Sunbelieveable Services, a solar installation company.
